Perseverance and Resistance in Higher Education in Brazil

January 18, 2022, 3:00pm
Virtual Event: Zoom Link

A majority (54%) of Brazil’s 209 million people are of African descent, making Brazil the second largest Black nation in the world. Yet, only a fourth of the country’s graduate students are Black. To fight this systemic form of oppression, five Black women at the University of Sao Paulo started a mentorship program for Black and LGBTQIA+ students who seek to apply for graduate degrees. The program is called Iteramaxe—a Yoruba word for perseverance and resistance. Collaborators at Iteramaxe assist minoritized Brazilians by seeking funding (for books, computers, and application fees) and advising them as they prepare their application portfolios. This event will be a presentation about Iteramaxe. The goal is to raise awareness about exclusion in higher education in Brazil and collect feedback on funding opportunities.

Moreover, as leaders and future leaders, we each have the opportunity to be a Changemaker by creating policies and practices that support the well-being of those we work with. A key goal is for each person to take away a set of practical strategies and habits they can employ to support mental and physical health while also supporting future success in research. Hosted by the Materials Research Science & Engineering Center and Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
