UCGHI STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

The University of California Global Health Institute is seeking applicants across all 10 UC campuses and partnering with Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, for its 2020-2021 Student Ambassador Program.

This leadership opportunity is open to all students (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, medical, nursing, law, etc.) who are dedicated to personal and professional growth by serving and representing their respective UC or HBCU campus. UCGHI Student Ambassadors will develop, organize, and promote Women's Health, Gender, and Empowerment (WHGE) or Planetary Health (PH) activities on UC campuses and mobilize student, faculty and staff involvement to catalyze critical change. Students will receive a $250 stipend. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to engage with key faculty, researchers, and leaders in either PH or WHGE while also strengthening professional networks.

The Global Ethics of Affirmative Action

UC San Diego Changemaker Institute in partnership with the Institute for Practical Ethics (IPE) presents a 3-part quarterly webinar series focused on Global Ethics of today’s most pressing issues, such as climate change and advances in genetic manipulation.

In observance of Global Ethics Day on October 21, and the upcoming 2020 election, the first session will focus on the Global Ethics of Affirmative Action. With the upcoming ballot initiative in California – which seeks to overturn the current ban on granting preferential treatment to persons on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in public employment, public education, and public contracting – this important discussion will delve into the ethics of the issue.

Join us for a panel discussion, anchored by Marisa A. Abrajano , Interim Provost UC San Diego-Warren College & Professor of Political Science, and student advocate, Laura Zwicker (UCSD Alumna ’19, currently PhD, Yale School of the Environment)

Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge

Do you have a vision to change the world? Our world needs changemakers who create new models and work within new paradigms of sustainable change. Innovate with us to make this world a better place and participate in the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge (GSIC).
The GSIC is a social venture pitch competition that recognizes, resources and rewards student-led social ventures focused on sustainable change. Apply for the chance to pitch your venture to a panel of judges for up to $50,000 in funding and other resources.

Events include DIY candlemaker, Library Walk Jenga, a Zotero workshop, a How to Paraphrase Effectively workshop, and a discussion about contract cheating that includes free pizza!
		Global Ethics Day Wednesday, October 16, 2019 Global Ethics Day provides an opportunity for organizations around the world to hold events on or around this day, exploring the meaning of ethics in international affairs — and to share your #globalethicsday2019 activities widely on social media.
		Volunteer Night at the Food Bank* Thursday, October 10, 2019, 6:00 - 8:00 PM Join fellow campus members on the second Thursday of each month for UC San Diego Volunteer Night at the Food Bank. Volunteers help with projects such as packaging fresh produce, sorting food donations and assembling food packages. Please note: volunteers must sign up through sdfb.volunteerhub.com and enter code “ucsd50.” Please arrive on time and be sure to wear close-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty.
		Inaugural Border Innovation Challenge Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Join us for the first Border Innovation Challenge, a business plan competition awarding $20,000 to promising solutions and technologies that meet the efficiency and security needs of the region's ports of entry. Supported by the San Diego-Tijuana Smart Border Coalition, the program is presented through a partnership of the Rady School of Management and the Jacobs Scool of Engineering at UC San Diego. 		CGI U - IBM Call for Code Hackathon Friday, May 17 - Saturday, May 18, 2019 Hosted from May 17-18 on campus, this collaborative event will challenge university students from all backgrounds to develop solutions for global distaster response and resilience efforts. Students will be given access to IBM technical resources and topic experts, and winning teams will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to send a member to the next CGI University meeting. 		2019-2020 Working Across Differences Fund: Call for Proposals Due Monday, May 6, 2019 at 11:59 PM EST The purpose of the Working Across Differences Fund is to provide grants of up to $10,000 each to Changemaker Campuses to accelerate the development, application, and proliferation of methodologies that build bridges across different campuses. 		Annual Global Empowerment Summit- Time To Rise Saturday, October 6, 2018 The 2018 Annual Global Empowerment Summit "Time to Rise!" encourages everyone to become a global change maker! All are welcome to attend this free, public event at UC San Diego Qualcomm Institute in Atkinson Hall. Summit attendees will explore topics, such as the power of collaboration, social impact, global connection, human triumph, recognition, and the power of collective minds as a means for solving worldwide social issues, like human trafficking.
