Film Viewing: Sisters With Transistors 

The Anthropology, Performance, and Technology (APT) Program in the Jacobs School of Engineering invites you to a screening of SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS, a feature-length documentary film about the early female pioneers in electronic music.
The film addresses the challenges faced by women in sound design engineering. 

Note: This will be a two-part, virtual activity. The film will be made available online from January 16-19 online with a passcode for participants to view prior to a panel discussion taking place on January 18th. Participant registration for this two-part event will include a link to access the video (which will be sent to registrants via email prior to the screening dates), and a link to access the live panel discussion virtually.

 MLK Jr. Week of Service: Compassion Prison Project Letter Writing

Write letters to people who are incarcerated and inmates on death row and become a pen pal. This project is through California nonprofit, Compassion Prison Project. CPP's mission is to transform prisons and communities through trauma-informed, compassionate action. This event is part of the MLK Jr. Week of Service, hosted by the Center for Student Involvement.

Introduction to the Diversity and Science Lecture series

Perseverance and Resistance in Higher Education in Brazil

A majority (54%) of Brazil’s 209 million people are of African descent, making Brazil the second largest Black nation in the world. Yet, only a fourth of the country’s graduate students are Black. To fight this systemic form of oppression, five Black women at the University of Sao Paulo started a mentorship program for Black and LGBTQIA+ students who seek to apply for graduate degrees. The program is called Iteramaxe—a Yoruba word for perseverance and resistance. Collaborators at Iteramaxe assist minoritized Brazilians by seeking funding (for books, computers, and application fees) and advising them as they prepare their application portfolios. This event will be a presentation about Iteramaxe. The goal is to raise awareness about exclusion in higher education in Brazil and collect feedback on funding opportunities.

This interactive panel will be moderated by the Director of APT, Hortense Gerardo, and will feature surprise guests (TBD). Panelists will share their unique perspectives as they relate to the film and audience members will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ask questions during a Q&A.

Participants will still be able to attend the Live Panel Discussion even if they have not viewed the film, but viewing is recommended for a more informed and deeper discussion. Participant registration for this two-part event will include a link to access the video (which will be sent to registrants via email prior to the screening dates), and a link to access the live panel discussion virtually. A second confirmation email and reminder will be sent to registrants prior to the panel discussion to allow them to submit questions for the panelists ahead of time.

However, sacrificing self‐care can be extremely harmful. In this interactive seminar, we will discuss ways that high performance and self‐care can be mutually reinforcing and allow us to thrive. Moreover, as leaders and future leaders, we each have the opportunity to be a Changemaker by creating policies and practices that support the well-being of those we work with. A key goal is for each person to take away a set of practical strategies and habits they can employ to support mental and physical health while also supporting future success in research. Sparking Change Through Innovation

The hope is to explore what social change means to each individual and discuss the process of progress in our communities.

This event is a part of the Changemaker Week, UCSD Carrefore Companions project, and Intergenerational Connections. UCSD Carrefore Companions is a project that aims to link undergraduates UC San Diego students and seniors within the community to form relationships and feel connected during this isolating time.
